Former Chiefs winger speaks after alcohol addiction treatment

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Kgaogelo Sekgota has been fighting a different kind of battle lately, one far from the spotlight.

After parting ways with Motsepe Foundation Championship side Upington City earlier this year, the 28-year-old found himself facing a personal test.

Amakhosi fans should still remember Sekgota. It was only in 2023 when the nippy winger left Soweto after two assists in 48 appearances.

KAIZER CHIEFS’ FORMER WINGER KGAOGELO SEKGOTA CHANGES HIS LIFE

Reports on social media claimed that the former Bidvest Wits and Swallows star had been struggling with marijuana and alcohol abuse. Last season, Sekgota was dismissed by two Betway Premiership clubs after six months at each club: Stellenbosch and Magesi.

After a prolonged period of battle, he made the brave decision to check into the Hope of Achievers Rehabilitation Centre outside Polokwane, a four-month stay that, according to him, changed his life completely.

Now back on the pitch with Tubatse United in the SAFA Limpopo ABC Motsepe League, Sekgota says he feels reborn, mentally stronger and focused on rebuilding his career.

“I had to go there and reset myself,” he told FARPost. “My family and my partner stood by me when I needed them most.”

“I’ve learnt from my challenges. I’m myself again. I’m working hard to do what’s best for me and my family.”

A MESSAGE TO THE PUBLIC

For Sekgota, who previously turned out for Kaizer Chiefs, Stellenbosch FC, and Magesi FC, the lessons go beyond football. He hopes his story inspires others who might be going through dark times to seek help instead of hiding their struggles.

“I’m fully recovered, and I believe many young people will take an example from this. If you have challenges in life, face them and work on them,” Sekgota concluded.
