Weather alert: Thunderstorm and heat warnings for Sunday

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has released its latest forecast for Sunday, 9 November, predicting partly cloudy conditions across much of the country, with temperatures ranging from cool to warm and isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, becoming widespread over the central parts.

Weather warnings

Yellow Level 2 Warning:
SAWS has issued an impact-based warning for severe thunderstorms, which may lead to localised flooding of roads, low-lying areas, and bridges in the eastern parts of the Northern Cape and the western parts of the Free State.

Heat advisories

Heatwave conditions are expected to persist over the West Coast, the City of Cape Town, and the western parts of the Cape Winelands, with persistently high temperatures expected throughout the weekend.

Gauteng:
Cloudy to cool and warm conditions with isolated showers and thundershowers.
UVB Index: Moderate.

Mpumalanga:
Cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers, but dry in the Lowveld.

Limpopo:
Partly cloudy at first, becoming cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers, except in the Lowveld.

North West:
Partly cloudy and warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers – scattered in the extreme west.

Free State:
Partly cloudy to cool and warm, with scattered showers and thundershowers, isolated in the east.

Coastal provinces

Northern Cape:
Morning fog along the coast, otherwise partly cloudy to cloudy and warm, with scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers. Winds will be light to moderate north to north-westerly.

Western Cape:
Morning fog patches along the coast, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to very hot, with isolated showers and thundershowers over the central and eastern interior. Cooler conditions are expected over the Peninsula.
UVB Index: Very high – residents are advised to take precautions against sun exposure.

Eastern Cape (western half):
Morning fog in southern parts, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers. Widespread rain is expected in the north by afternoon.
Coastal winds: Moderate to fresh easterly.

Eastern Cape (eastern half):
Morning fog south of the escarpment, partly cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers, becoming widespread in the north later.
Coastal winds: Moderate to fresh north-easterly.

KwaZulu-Natal:
Morning fog over the interior, partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers in the west.
Coastal winds: Moderate to fresh northerly to north-easterly.
UVB Index: High – take precautions when outdoors.
