Ex-Gauteng cop arrested for unlicensed firearms linked to gangs

The Mokopane Regional Court in Limpopo sentenced former Gauteng police sergeant Ntshavheni Ndonyane, 44, to five years in prison for possessing unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Police arrested Ndonyane in April 2024 near Nyl Plaza Tollgate during an intelligence-driven operation targeting organised crime linked to gang killings in Thohoyandou.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said a multidisciplinary team investigating violent crimes arrested the former cop.

Ledwaba said the crimes under investigation were linked to the Jerusalem Gang and the Black Mafia Forum (BMF).

Ndonyane served with the Public Order Policing (POPS) Johannesburg Unit at the time of his arrest, said Ledwaba.

“After his arrest, SAPS dismissed him, and he remained in custody until his case concluded on 6 November 2025,” Ledwaba said.

Sergeant Lucas Letlotlo Ledwaba of the Provincial Investigation Unit led the investigation that secured Nodayane’s conviction.

Acting provincial commissioner, Major General Jan Scheepers, commended the investigators.

“This conviction sends a strong and clear message that the SAPS will not tolerate any form of criminal conduct within its ranks.

We will continue to dismantle organized criminal networks and ensure that those who betray the badge face the consequences in terms of the law,” said Scheepers.
