Talented Lions player facing assault charges

Lions centre Bronson Mills, who made his URC debut earlier this year, has found himself in legal trouble after appearing in the Wynberg Magistrate’s court this week to face charges of alleged assault.

The 22-year-old player is accused of assaulting a Cape Town student, Marumo Selane, during an altercation at a house gathering in the early hours of Monday, 27 October.

According to a detailed statement provided by the alleged victim, the incident escalated after Mills reportedly accused Selane of stealing food.

Selane claims that Mills became “extremely aggressive,” dragged him out of the house, and “punched me multiple times in the face, threw me to the ground, and kicked me”, while allegedly under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Selane listed a black eye, a bruised forehead, a swollen lip, cheek, and jaw, and multiple cuts as his injuries.

Assault case against Lions star postponed

Mills handed himself over to the Hout Bay police station before his court appearance, and he has reportedly denied the charges against him.

The only response from a Lions spokesperson was to state that the club would refrain from commenting on the case until they have been fully briefed by the player’s legal representatives.

The case has been postponed until November 11, allowing both legal teams time to prepare.

Matter under investigation

According to police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk in the Western Cape, Mills was released on bail.

Some reports suggest that Mills admitted to being at the house where the alleged incident took place, but he only admitted to “slapping” Selane.
