The South African Weather Service has issued a yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in Gauteng and surrounding areas.
Residents should prepare for heavy downpours, strong winds, and possible hail as unstable weather conditions move across the province.
Thunderstorms and possible hail expected in Gauteng
Phemelo Zonke, a weather forecaster, said thunderstorms are expected mainly in the extreme northern parts of Gauteng and Limpopo.
“These storms could bring heavy downpours, strong, damaging winds, large amounts of small hail, or excessive lightning,” Zonke cautioned.
The South African Weather Service has advised motorists and residents to remain alert, especially during the evening commute, as reduced visibility and wet roads could make driving hazardous.
Heat and fire risks persist elsewhere
While the north braces for rain, the western interior faces another threat, high fire danger conditions. Zonke added that “runaway veld fires remain possible in the western interior where hot and dry conditions continue.”
Daytime temperatures are expected to be cool across Gauteng.
Caution Urged for Morning Travel
Fog patches are likely in some areas early in the morning, particularly along the escarpment and high-lying regions, with visibility dropping to less than a kilometre.
Zonke advised: “Motorists should take caution during early travel and maintain a safe following distance.”
As thunderstorms, fog, and heat combine across the province, residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the South African Weather Service.
