The City of Cape Town is offering an exciting Metro Police and Traffic Learnership opportunity under its Corporate Services Directorate (Human Resources Department). This programme aims to train and develop competent law enforcement officers who will support the City’s safety and security objectives.
Successful learners will receive a stipend of R36.66 per hour during training and will undergo rigorous academic and physical training in line with the Further Education and Training Certificate: Road Traffic Law Enforcement and the Law Enforcement Skills Programme (SP4/2012).

Requirements
Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
- Grade 12 qualification (documentary proof required)
- Must be a permanent resident within the jurisdiction of the City of Cape Town (proof required)
- Proficiency in English and at least one other official language
- Must be 18 years or older and under 35 years old
- Must be medically and physically fit to undergo strenuous physical training
- Must be mentally resilient and able to cope under pressure
- No criminal record or pending criminal cases
- Must have a valid driver’s licence (minimum Code B – manual transmission)
- Must have no visible tattoos when wearing any official uniform
- Must be unemployed as of the date of enrolment (7 January 2026)
Physical Fitness Assessments
All shortlisted candidates will undergo compulsory physical fitness tests. These are elimination-based, meaning that failure to meet the standard in one test disqualifies the applicant from continuing to the next stage.
Fitness Tests Include:
- 2.4 km run (Males: 12 min; Females: 14 min)
- Push-ups (30 in 60 seconds)
- Sit-ups (30 in 60 seconds)
- Dead load carry (2 x 25 kg weights over 100 m)
- Tyre drag (20 m distance)
- 20 m shuttle runs (10 shuttles in 60 seconds)
- 2.1 m wall clearance
- Motorcycle reach test
- Comfort swim (any stroke, unassisted)
Note: Pregnant applicants will not be allowed to undergo the physical assessments.
Selection Process
Candidates will be required to:
- Pass a written assessment and interview
- Pass a City medical evaluation
- Undergo a drug test and be drug-free
- Pass a City driver assessment
- Undergo psychological and continuous fitness evaluations
- Provide fingerprints and ID for criminal record checks
Only candidates who pass all stages will be considered for appointment.
Special Conditions
- Successful candidates will sign a training contract with the City and will not automatically be offered permanent employment after completion.
- Learners will be expected to wear a uniform, work shifts, and perform duties in all weather conditions.
- Candidates must maintain continuous physical and mental fitness.
- Applicants dismissed from any municipality for misconduct will not be considered.
- Candidates with chronic illnesses or undisclosed medical conditions that affect performance may be excluded from the programme.
- Successful learners will be contractually bound to refund the City if they withdraw, fail, or are dismissed from the programme.

Important Information
