A resurfaced clip from Selena Gomez’s My Mind and Me documentary has been making the rounds again, and people are losing their minds over this incredibly out-of-touch moment with a Kenyan schoolgirl.
Two years ago, Selena Gomez was the focus of an Apple TV documentary called My Mind and Me. It told the story of six years of her life as she struggled to balance mental health, physical health and fame.

One part of the documentary was about Selena’s humanitarian work for people in need. She works with UNICEF and WE foundation to help improve access to education. The singer took a trip to Kenya to meet some of the children supported by these charities, and had an incredibly out-of-touch conversation.
A Kenyan girl opened up to Selena about the struggles she faced, explaining that she was going to be married off by her family, but thanks to access to education, she can pursue school instead. Selena’s bizarre response has people on socials scratching their heads.
“I grew up in a family of eight. My mum and dad have eight kids. My mum told me they want me to be married off, but they said ‘Since you got a scholarship to go to England, and since we don’t pay any fee, you’re not going to be married off’,” she said.

One of Selena’s producers said, “that’s great”, before Selena asked a weirdly timed question.
“Do you believe in love?” she said.
The young girl laughed, then said: “Love?”
Selena shrugged and repeated the question, looking around at the other schoolgirls she’s eating with who all look extremely confused.
People on TikTok and X are pointing out how absurd it is to ask teenage girls about love right after they opened up about almost being forced into child marriage.
do we remember when the biggest pick me in the industry asked inappropriate question when they were discussing child marriage wtf https://t.co/90zi7tUOtd pic.twitter.com/OTlEqvx5EZ

“Shows that she wasn’t listening to a word those girls were speaking. She’s in her own little melodrama in her head where Biebs pick her and they live happy ever after,” said one person on X.
“She has one of the best PR teams ever because how did she get away with this?” said another.
Selena never responded to the backlash after the clip first went viral, but it’s safe to say she’s never beating the clueless allegations.
