Lawyer fined for speeding at 222 km/h in 120 km/h zone

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, has welcomed the conviction and sentencing of a lawyer who was caught speeding at 220km/h in a 120km/h zone.

Duma said the Scottburgh Magistrate’s court sentenced 32-year-old Monde Nzima, who pleaded guilty, to a R40,000 fine or 24 months’ imprisonment.

Half of his sentence was suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence.

SPEEDING LAWYER FAILED TO STOP

The lawyer from Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape, was arrested on 2 August 2025 by members of the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) in Park Rynie.

He was driving a blue Mercedes-Benz C200 and failed to stop when ordered to do so, prompting a brief chase before his arrest.

Duma commended the RTI officers for their swift action and urged motorists to prioritise safety on the roads.

“Following this sentencing, the conversation we should have as a society should focus on whether speeding and running away from traffic officers is acceptable behaviour from lawyers,” Duma said in a statement on Wednesday.

He called on the Legal Practice Council to take disciplinary action against Nzima, saying the legal profession must demonstrate transparency and accountability when its members act unlawfully.

Duma warned that reckless and high-speed driving caused serious injuries, disability, and trauma for families who lose loved ones in crashes.
