Dr Yamilet Castaneda, a Cuban national, appeared before the Thabazimbi Magistrates’ court on Tuesday on a charge of theft of medication.
Limpopo NPA spokesperson Mashudu Malabi said Castaneda, 54, allegedly stole the medication from Thabazimbi Hospital last month.
Malabi said a security guard flagged the alleged theft after recovering medication during a search.

“The incident took place on 2 September 2025, at approximately 06:45, when a security officer at the hospital’s main gate conducted a routine search and found unauthorised medication in the doctor’s bag,” Malabi said on Tuesday.
She added that the guard found medication worth R1,780 in her bag.
Police arrested the doctor on Wednesday after reportedly traveling to Cuba.
Malabi said the doctor was released on warning and the case was postponed to 28 November for further investigation.
Malabi reiterated the NPA’s commitment to fighting crime.
