The Wits Anglo American Digital Dome is at the Faculty of Science at the Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg. It was previously known as the Wits Planetarium and has been running since 1960. It’s also been described as the first full-sized planetarium in Africa, and the new dome is considered one of the largest in the southern hemisphere.
Over the last couple of years, the planetarium has undergone refurbishments, which have further enhanced it into a state-of-the-art facility for research, education, and entertainment. It’s a multi-disciplinary dome, in other words, it welcomes exploration and expression in all spheres of knowledge, from science to the arts, the earth to the skies above, and beyond.
It offers technology geared to create an immersive experience for both learners and teachers alike, including the public, who can watch various available shows. It’s also the perfect fun activity to do with the kiddies during their holidays. The 360-degree visual experience has been enhanced by 10 digital projectors, which reportedly replaced the old Zeiss projector, which provides an 8k resolution, and the sound is an 8.2 audio system.
