Jake White gets a new job at top South African SCHOOL

Former Springbok coach Jake White has taken up his first coaching role since parting ways with the Bulls earlier this year, joining Selborne College in East London as a rugby consultant from 2026.

The 61-year-old 2007 Rugby World Cup-winning coach will assist the prestigious Eastern Cape school in strengthening its rugby programme – marking a return to his roots in schoolboy rugby, where his coaching journey began decades ago.

‘Rugby tradition’

“I’m excited to see what rugby looks like there now since I started coaching schools rugby years ago,” White said.

“The most important thing is to build on what’s already in place. There’s an incredible rugby tradition and the catchment area is enormous. The Eastern Cape produces very good rugby players.”

White’s appointment was facilitated by Phiwe Nomlomo, a former Selborne 1st XV coach who worked alongside him at the Bulls.

“Phiwe told me they’d like my input and that someone like me could add a lot of value,” White said.

“He asked me to visit, and I did exactly that.”

‘Expressed enthusiasm’

A former Jeppe High School pupil, teacher, and coach, White expressed enthusiasm about returning to the schoolboy scene.

“Schoolboy rugby is probably the purest form of the game. It’s the traditions, the jerseys, the family support. Everyone wants to be part of it.”

Selborne College also announced the appointment of Derek Page, a former head boy and 1st XV player, as the school’s new director of rugby, signaling a renewed focus on developing top-tier rugby talent in the Eastern Cape.

White’s involvement is expected to bring invaluable expertise and mentorship to one of South Africa’s most storied school rugby institutions.

Most Tests coached

Jake White coached the Springboks in 54 Tests, the most by any coach of the national team.

White’s first Test was a 31-17 win over Ireland on 12 June 2004 at the Free State Stadium, and his final Test came against Wales at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on 24 November 2007, which the Springboks won 34-12.

All told, White won 36, lost 17 and drew 1 of his 54 Tests at the helm for a win percentage of 66.7%.
