Manyaba Rubben Mohlaloga, a former Member of Parliament and ex-chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Agriculture and Land Affairs, has finally begun serving a 20-year prison sentence for corruption.
Mohlaloga reported to the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on 23 October 2025 to start his term, which was originally handed down in February 2019.
The conviction relates to the irregular siphoning of R6 million from the Land Bank’s AgriBEE Fund in February 2008. The fund, valued at R100 million, was explicitly earmarked for the empowerment of Black farmers who were previously disadvantaged.
Investigations by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit, launched after the Land Bank reported the misuse, found that the R6 million payment was made to an entity on the verbal instruction of the then-Land Bank CEO, completely bypassing standard approval procedures. Mohlaloga, who was serving as a committee chairperson at the time, was identified as one of the individuals who personally benefited from the illicit transaction.
The former MP’s legal challenges, including appeals to both the Pretoria High Court and the Supreme Court of Appeal, were ultimately dismissed. His final attempt to remain free failed when the Pretoria High Court refused his bail application on 13 October 2025, leading to the order for his immediate surrender for incarceration.
