WATCH | Protest turns violent outside Milnerton High School

Tensions flared outside Milnerton High School on Monday afternoon as police fired stun grenades to disperse a group of EFF supporters demanding answers over a recent bullying incident that has shaken the community.

According to reports, the group gathered outside the school gates, calling for Principal Gert JP van Tonder to address them directly.

Van Tonder reportedly emerged briefly, but told the crowd he was not authorised to speak, a response that escalated the protesters’ frustration.

The situation quickly deteriorated as some demonstrators attempted to breach the school’s gates, prompting SAPS and metro police to intervene with stun grenades to push back the crowd and restore order.

Protest Captured on Camera

Footage shows protesters voicing their anger and asserting their constitutional right to protest, with one individual calling for accountability from both the school and the police.

The protest follows the viral circulation of a video last week showing a Grade 10 learner being physically and verbally assaulted by a group of boys, allegedly including members of the school’s First XV rugby squad.

The disturbing footage has sparked nationwide outrage, prompting calls for urgent intervention by the Department of Education.

Road Closures and Heightened Security

As a precaution, the Milnerton Crime Watch Trust issued warnings about road closures in the area, including:

  • Pienaar Road and Broad Road
  • Pienaar Road and Lupin Crescent
  • Erica Road and Ascot Road

A heavy police presence remains at the school to prevent further unrest.

Authorities have urged residents and motorists to avoid the area until calm is fully restored.

Ongoing Investigation and Accountability

Milnerton High School has confirmed that eight learners have been suspended pending a full disciplinary inquiry.

Meanwhile, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) and SAPS are investigating the incident, with police opening a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

As the school community grapples with the fallout, national attention continues to grow.

The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education has called for firm action, saying the incident borders on criminal assault and must not be treated lightly.

With tensions still high, many are now looking to school authorities, law enforcement, and the WCED to ensure justice is served, and to restore confidence in learner safety and institutional accountability.
