South Africa grants yet another country visa-free access

Citizens of Lithuania will now be able to enter South Africa without a visa for stays of up to 90 days.

This follows a new decision by the Department of Home Affairs, which was officially launched on 7 October 2025.

The announcement makes Lithuania the latest addition to South Africa’s growing list of visa-free nations.

The move follows similar decisions to lift visa requirements for Bulgaria and Estonia, signalling a broader shift in South Africa’s visa policy aimed at strengthening ties with European countries and boosting tourism and trade.

Under the new policy, Lithuanian passport holders visiting South Africa for short-term stays will no longer need to submit applications through the South African Embassy in Stockholm or use the online e-visa system.

According to Rasa Jankauskaitė, Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to South Africa, the visa requirement change marks “a long-awaited diplomatic achievement” and reflects “consistent efforts by both countries to strengthen bilateral ties, promote tourism, cultural exchange, and business cooperation.”

“This is a historic moment for Lithuania–South Africa relations,” Jankauskaitė said.

“The visa-free regime will open up new opportunities for our citizens to explore South Africa’s culture, impressive nature, and establish business contacts. We hope this step will contribute to stronger economic ties and increased traveler flows between our countries.” Jankauskaitė also added.

The Department of Home Affairs has not ruled out further expansions of its visa-free list, which is part of South Africa’s broader strategy to attract more visitors, diversify international partnerships, and ease travel barriers for friendly nations.
