  • Milnerton High School has suspended eight pupils after a viral video showed them brutally assaulting a 16-year-old student with weapons.
  • The school and the WCED are holding formal disciplinary hearings, while SAPS investigates a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
  • A legal expert warned that circulating or failing to report the video could lead to complicity and legal consequences for the public.

Milnerton High School has suspended eight pupils following a wave of public outrage over a disturbing social media video depicting a brutal assault on a fellow learner.

The footage, which rapidly circulated online, shows a 16-year-old Grade 10 boy being violently attacked by a group of pupils using belts, a hosepipe, and a large stick, while other pupils spectate. Reports indicate two additional learners were assaulted during the same incident.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) confirmed that the eight pupils implicated in the attack have been issued precautionary suspension letters and will now face formal disciplinary hearings.

WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond stated the school governing body acted swiftly, treating the matter with the “seriousness it deserves.”

The South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm following the incident, which occurred around 2:40 p.m. on 16 October. No arrests have been made to date.

Milnerton High Principal Gert van Tonder has assured parents the school is following formal disciplinary procedures. Meanwhile, the WCED has urged the public to cease circulating the “harmful content” footage.

Family law expert Bertus Preller warned that those who filmed or shared the video without reporting the crime could face legal repercussions, noting that not preventing or reporting an offence can lead to complicity.
