Johannesburg Water to cut supply for 10 hours in these areas

Johannesburg Water will cut water supply for 10 hours on Thursday, 23 October, in parts of Zandspruit to connect new pipelines and improve infrastructure. The shutdown will affect residents from 8:00 to 18:00, impacting Zandspruit 191IQ, Zandspruit Extension 53, and Zandspruit Extension 90.

According to the utility, the shutdown will allow teams to complete critical work, including “tie in of new 200mm pipeline to 110mm existing mainline, tie in of new 160mm pipeline to existing 160mm; tie in of new 110mm pipeline to existing 110mm; and tie in of new fire hydrant onto existing 110mm pipeline.”

Streets affected include Constantia Street, Carmen Road, and Valentine’s Road. Johannesburg Water confirmed that no water will be available during the interruption, but assured residents that the work will lead to “improved service delivery and water supply to new water infrastructure.”

Free water during outages, residents warned of illegal water supply sales

The utility has again cautioned residents against purchasing water from unauthorised individuals during supply interruptions.

“Water distributed through our water trucks during outages is free of charge,” the city emphasised in a recent statement.

Johannesburg Water warned that some individuals have been illegally selling water from official tankers, taking advantage of desperate residents during planned or emergency shutdowns.

“The sale of water goes against our commitment to providing free alternative supply,” it added.

The utility urged residents to remain vigilant and to report any incidents of illegal activity. It called on the public to collect details such as the time, date, and location, as well as truck registration numbers, photos, or videos, and submit them with a detailed statement.

Reporting corruption and improving service delivery

Residents can report corruption to the Johannesburg Water contact centre or anonymously through the city’s anti-corruption channels. The utility also encouraged community members to escalate issues to their local ward councillors to ensure accountability.
