At least 185 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in Johannesburg between Monday, 13 October, and Sunday, 19 October 2025.
The arrests were made during the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s (JMPD) week-long operations aimed at enhancing public safety and enforcing traffic laws.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the high visibility of officers and continuous roadblocks were instrumental in removing reckless drivers from the city’s roads.
“This operation reaffirms the JMPD’s zero-tolerance approach to lawlessness that compromises the safety of residents,” Fihla said.
Commenting on the figures, JMPD Acting Chief of Police, Acting Commissioner Eldred Fortein, issued a stern warning.
“The arrest of 185 motorists in just seven days for incidents involving intoxication is completely unacceptable. These individuals made a selfish choice to endanger every other road user in Johannesburg. The JMPD is committed to reclaiming our roads,” said Fortein.
He added that the department’s message remains clear:
“If you operate a vehicle while impaired or negligently, our officers will find you. We will not relent in our efforts to ensure that traffic regulations and municipal by-laws are respected, and offenders will be held accountable to the full extent of the law.”
The JMPD has urged all residents and visitors to plan alternate transport arrangements if consuming alcohol, adhere to speed limits, and ensure their vehicle and licence documentation are up to date and compliant.
