About the Bursary
The Subtrop Lindsey Milne Bursary provides financial assistance to students pursuing studies within South Africa’s subtropical fruit industry. Funding is aimed at students in BSc Agriculture who major in Horticultural Science (and related fields) or Agricultural Economics. Awards are granted for one academic year at a time, renewable based on satisfactory academic performance, with value determined by student need and reviewed annually.

Coverage & Selection
- Bursary value based on need (reviewed annually).
- Selection by a Subtrop-appointed panel; successful candidates sign a contractual agreement.
- Notifications by 31 December 2025 (no feedback by then = unsuccessful).
Obligations
- Where possible, seminars/projects must focus on subtropical crops (avocado, mango, litchi).
- Work-back: after graduation, recipients work for SA Subtropical Growers’ Association (Subtrop) for a period equal to the years funded (if a suitable position is available; if not, no obligation—Subtrop assists with placement among member associations).
- If a funded course is failed, the bursary must be repaid over a period equal to the bursary length, starting the year after the award year.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Have completed Matric.
- Be studying a BSc Agriculture degree majoring in Horticultural Science (and related fields) or Agricultural Economics.
- Be enrolled at a recognised South African tertiary institution.
- Intend to pursue a career in the subtropical fruit industry in South Africa.
- Read and agree to all terms on the application form.
Required Documents
Submit clear, certified copies (where applicable) of:
- ID document
- Matric certificate
- Full university academic record/transcripts (on institution letterhead)
- Motivation letter (Subtrop explicitly warns: do not use AI to write this letter)
- CV (max 2 pages)
- Details of any other bursary/scholarship held
- Three references (name, relationship, email, contact number)
