Another week, another meme that is haunting every waking moment of my life. This time it’s the turn of a white rabbit who looks very pleased for himself as he smugly clutches a ticking clock pocket watch. Why has this surfaced and dominated every timeline under the sun? You tell me. But here he is and I cannot escape him and nor can I stop thinking about him. But where did this white rabbit with the ticking clock meme come from? I figured if I had such an itching desire to know myself then you definitely all do too, so here’s the origins of it. And no, it’s not AI – which had me shook actually.
The origins of the main character internet rabbit
Here he is, the animal of the hour. So, the origin of the white rabbit with the ticking pocket watch clock meme actually comes from DeviantArt. An artist called LuzTapia posted the picture as Alice in Wonderland White Rabbit fan art, but the picture has since been deleted. It started getting used as a meme as early as 2016.
It then started popping up in some TikToks in May of this year, but had its main boom now in October 2025.

People are just of course using it for whenever time is running out. Classic. People have even used it about the meme itself which is just extremely meta. Like, when big corporations start using the meme people were quoting it with the meme. You couldn’t write it.
Luz Tapia has actually spoken out about the insane growth, and Tapia loves that everyone is enjoying the art and making it a meme. “I grew up on meme culture so it makes me happy to see everyone enjoying it so much,” Tapia told Forbes.
Tapia also proved beyond doubt with a video that they made the artwork the old fashioned way – pre Ai. Icon.
