Residents in Gauteng can expect sizzling heat and afternoon thunderstorms today, with the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issuing warnings for severe weather in parts of the province.
Lehlohonolo Thobela, a forecaster, said high temperatures will dominate much of the region. “Pretoria will peak at 34°C, while Johannesburg and Ermelo are both expected to reach highs of 31°C,” Thobela explained.
He added that the conditions would remain “very hot across the northern parts of Gauteng, with thunderstorms developing later in the day.”
Severe thunderstorms and localised flooding are possible in Gauteng
SAWS has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms over the eastern and central areas of Limpopo, extending into parts of Gauteng. These storms may bring heavy downpours, damaging winds, and the possibility of hail.
According to Thobela, “There’s a significant risk of localised flooding in low-lying areas, particularly in regions prone to poor drainage.”
He urged residents to remain alert and avoid travelling in storm-prone areas during the afternoon.
Hot afternoon, cooler evening
While the day will be dominated by high temperatures, cooler evening conditions are expected in parts of the province. “Temperatures will drop to about 13°C overnight in some southern regions,” Thobela added.
With thunderstorms forecast later today, residents are advised to secure outdoor items and monitor updates from weather authorities.
