And midway through the match, he questioned why Pickford still plays for Everton despite his exploits for the national team.

Dixon suggested that he should move to a “bigger club” – which sparked an immediate response from the Toffees.

The official club account shared a post on X which read: “9 top-flight titles, 5 FA Cups, 1 European title, one of football’s most passionate fanbases, a world-class new stadium.

“Everton FC – a big club: past, present & future, @LeeDixon2.”

Fans were quick to react, with one person commenting: “Only those beneath us try to bring us down.”

Another said: “It was a ridiculous comment to make.”

A third wrote: “Hilarious listening to Lee Dixon say why hasn’t Pickford moved to one of the ‘bigger clubs’. The same fella who’s been hammering him every time he plays for England.”

While a fourth added: “Nice for Lee Dixon to finally give Pickford some praise… Just a shame it came in the same breath as basically saying he should leave.”
