Netflix’s new thriller Wayward is full of mysteries. What is going on at Tall Pines? What happened in Laura’s past? Could Evelyn’s smile be any less creepy? Some of these questions are answered in the finale, and some are supposed to be open-ended. Don’t stress if you’re lost – the cast of Netflix’s Wayward have nicely broken down the ending for us.
The ending is supposed to be a bit vague
Did you finish the show feeling kind of annoyed? Well, that’s sort of the point.
Mae Martin, who came up with the show for Netflix and starred as Alex, told Tudum: “I like the moral ambiguity and grey area of the finale. I hope people feel satisfied that they watched a really messed-up kind of fairy tale. Ultimately, I just hope it stays with people.”
There isn’t one answer for what happened to Laura’s parents
Sorry. So, after the dramatic revelations in episode six, Laura and Alex wonder whether Evelyn killed Laura’s parents. There’s another twist at the end. Evelyn claims Laura killed her parents with a rock when she was 17. Supposedly, Evelyn “leaped” Laura so she would forget these awful memories.

Sarah Gadon doesn’t believe her character Laura was intentionally lying about all this. “I think Laura genuinely believed that she didn’t kill her parents. That’s how I approached it – like she really has this conviction that she did not do something like that, and it was an accident.” Laura’s beliefs might not match up to reality though. “Denial is a very, very powerful thing,” Sarah Gadon added.
Mae Martin wants Netflix viewers to decide for themselves about what really happened to Laura’a parents. “I hope that people talk about it after they watch the show,” they said, “and maybe there will be some debate about how honest Evelyn is being.”
Does Evelyn die in Wayward?
Er, yes and no. We see Evelyn get stabbed with the toad venom and lose consciousness. In her head, she’s stuck in a room of green doors.

Good riddance

She might be in a coma forever, or dead, or not. “I’m going to let the viewers decide,” Martin said.
I guess the mysteriousness of Evelyn’s ending leaves it open for her to return if Netflix says yes to a second season of Wayward…?
No, Alex doesn’t leave Tall Pines
We’re all hopeful for a moment… but then it turns out that Alex was only fantasising about driving off with the baby and with Abbie. He’s going to stick around with Laura.
Martin explained this was because he still loves Laura, and because he’s just not that heroic. “Alex stays because he cares more about his fantasy of this nuclear family and heteronormative life than he does about his moral compass.”

Sarah Gadon reckons Alex and Laura are soulmates. “I’m still rooting for them.”
Abbie might return to Tall Pines
Abbie does manage to escape from the Wayward Pines Academy. However, Leila chooses to stay. She hopes she might be able to heal at Tall Pines, and she wants to be part of the community there (however messed-up it may be).
Sydney Topliffe, who starred as Abbie, doesn’t know what her character will do next, but doubts she’s done with Tall Pines. She said: “Abbie has so many loose ends still attached to the school. She’s smart and might be like, ‘Maybe I should get some help.’”
