If your TikTok is anything like mine, every other video is that annoying song that goes “going back to Honolulu just to get that Maui Wowie”. The song is accompanied by people strangely hanging off street signs, as you do. It’s confusing everyone, so what the hell is Maui Wowie and why are people doing that?! Here’s a full explanation of the TikTok trend that’s gone super viral.

Right, what the hell is Maui Wowie from that TikTok song?
If you’re one of the confused people, Maui Wowie is a strain of Marijuana made from a cross of Hawaiian and another unknown strain, hence the name. The line “going back to Honolulu just to get that Maui Wowie” comes from a Kid Cudi track of the same name, from his 2008 mixtape A Kid Named Cudi.
Genius describes it as a “chill track with island vibes” and a “tropical ode to Cudi’s fascination with a Hawaiian-themed strain of marijuana that goes by the street name Maui Wowie”. Well, now that part makes sense.
So, why are people hanging off street signs in the trend?
The weird trend of hanging off street signs while miming the song stems back to someone on TikTok called @aaronxbrownn, who posted a video of himself doing exactly that on 6th September 2025.
@aaronxbrownn omw to honolulu #fyp #mauiwowie
There’s no reason why he did it, but more and more people started copying, and it quickly turned into a trend. The sound had been used 75,000 times already and Kid Cudi himself has now posted a video of himself hanging from a traffic light, too.
In the caption, he wrote: “Yeaaaaaaaaaa thank you to everyone for posting my song and having fun and showing love!!! 17 years old and timeless.”

The trend has gone so viral that TikTok has had to put a warning on the videos to make people aware of the dangers of hanging off street signs, because “participating in this activity could result in you or others getting hurt”.
Another day, another random, pointless TikTok trend.
