The Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) invites students residing in KwaZulu-Natal to apply for the RBIDZ Bursary Programme for the 2026 academic year.

About the RBIDZ Bursary Programme

The RBIDZ Bursary Programme aims to provide financial support to academically deserving and financially needy students pursuing undergraduate studies within strategic fields that align with South Africa’s economic development goals.

Bursaries will be awarded to students pursuing studies in the following fields:

  • Accounting
  • Actuarial Science
  • Agriculture
  • Architecture
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Commerce
  • Community Development
  • Computer Science
  • Data Science
  • Economics
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronics Engineering
  • Energy Solutions
  • Environmental Studies
  • Finance
  • Geology
  • Geographic Information System (GIS)
  • Graphic Design
  • Information Technology
  • Marine / Maritime Studies
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Metallurgical Engineering
  • Social Sciences
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Surveying

Selection Process

Successful candidates will be selected based on academic merit and financial need. Shortlisted applicants may be required to participate in an assessment programme and an interview.

Please note:

  • The bursary is renewable annually, depending on the student’s academic performance and conduct.
  • Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted by 5 January 2026. If you do not receive feedback by this date, please consider your application unsuccessful.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must reside within KwaZulu-Natal province
  • Must be from a previously disadvantaged background
  • Must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric
  • Must have achieved a minimum overall average of 65% in Matric
  • Must be entering 1st year of full-time undergraduate study in one of the listed fields
  • Must have applied or been accepted at a recognised University or University of Technology in South Africa

  • Matric certificate or latest results (if currently in Matric)
  • Proof of application/acceptance from a University or University of Technology
  • Parents’ or guardians’ ID documents
  • Proof of household income (3 months payslips, affidavit, SASSA or pension proof)
  • Reference letter from a teacher or community leader
  • Motivational letter explaining why you should be selected
  • Proof of residence from your ward councillor or tribal authority
