Ex-Chelsea star reveals areas Enzo Maresca needs to improve on after missing out on two players in transfer window

JODY MORRIS joins the rest of the Chelsea faithful in wanting Enzo Maresca’s backline to be improved.

The Blues boss has kept his trust in goalkeeper Robert Sanchez – despite a string of errors including a sending off at Manchester United.

And the centre-back partnership in front of Sanchez is also frequently changing with red cards and injuries preventing any sort of consistency.

Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi – who came through Chelsea’s academy before leaving in 2021 – was available for just £35million in the summer.

And keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was sold to Manchester City for only £26m after being told he had no future left at PSG.

The Blues looked to have made no attempts to snap up either bargain buy – leaving even former Chelsea star and coach Morris confused.

He told SunSport: “If you spoke to most people regarding Chelsea, those were the positions that they obviously think maybe looked like needed strengthening more than elsewhere.

“But listen, at the end of the day whether Enzo Maresca felt that they needed changing or whether upstairs didn’t want to come through and support that, who knows?

“But yeah obviously I think if you’re talking about two players in Donnarumma and Marc Guehi, you absolutely would go, I think they enhance most teams, not just Chelsea.

“So whether Chelsea were in for both of them, who knows? They may have been and just might not have been able to get it over the line.”

Morris came through Chelsea’s academy and spent seven senior seasons with the club from 1996.

He later moved into coaching and was hired as Frank Lampard’s assistant at Derby in 2018.

Then a year later, both moved back to Chelsea as coaches before leaving in 2021.

Morris – who spent five months as Swindon manager in 2023 – still works for Chelsea TV – but will always be a fan first.

He said: “I don’t think you ever change who you support. I was a Chelsea fan before I was a footballer, I’ll be a Chelsea fan till I die.

“Like I said it’s my club, it’ll always be ingrained in me and yes, there’s certain moments that you like the club a little bit more than other times.

“But yeah, I always want the team to do well, want the players to do well, want the club to be thriving.

“So absolutely always try and get to the Bridge when I can, watch their watch and hope that we’re gonna go on and win more trophies.”

Morris revealed his favourite moment in football was watching Chelsea beat Tottenham in December 2019 in the away dugout.

And he will hope for another victory over Spurs when he takes on ex-Tottenham midfielder David Bentley in a charity boxing match on Saturday.

He said: “I ain’t got a message with David Bentley… I just hope he don’t knock me out!

“No, listen, I think it’s gonna be a good night, I think me and Benty will have a decent go with it as two novices in the boxing ring and try and enjoy it after.

“I think all the hard work and stuff is in the build up and trying to get yourself fit and trying to learn whilst sort of putting your body through it a little bit, hopefully we’ll have a decent night.

“Like I said, all you want is not to be embarrassed and wanna give as good as you can.”

Goalkeeper Graham Stack – who played with Morris at Milwall – is putting on the event on behalf of four charities – looking to raise £500,000.

All funds will be donated to Playskill, Sport In Mind, Willow Foundation, and Helping Hands.

Elsewhere on the card is Curtis Davies vs Paddy Kenny, Leroy Lita vs David Noble, Lee Trundle vs Anthony Gardner and Greg Halford vs Marvin Elliott.
