He purchased the property on Ibiza’s western coast from Swiss businessman Philippe Amon in 2022 but it has broken planning regulations.

Messi was faced with demolishing rooms that did not fit with the planning permission, including the garage and basement.

The home also boasts a 92-square-meter swimming pool and the property itself measures just over 16,000 square meters.

The villa, which is located in Sant Josep de Sa Talaia, still lacks the necessary permits and a certificate of occupancy.

While a mayoral decree prohibited Messi from carrying out any further work on the property in 2022.

The city council has now opened proceedings regarding the illegal changes and a partial demolition has not ruled out if the situation is not regularised, according to ABC.

There is also an environmental concern because the property is situated on protected land, and has been classified as a “toxic asset” because it cannot be sold or rented out.

Last year climate activists vandalised the mansion, dousing it in red and black paint after breaking into the property.

Messi reportedly responded by hitting the activists, who are part of Futuro Vegetal, with a £50,000 bill of compensation for criminal damage.
