The agency was looking for a Vehicle Installation Technician which pays £46,268 a year after a 12-month probationary period.

The job description reads: “As a Vehicle Installation Technician, you’ll work with a wide range of operational vehicles, fitting them with state-of-the-art technology. Far from your usual automotive role, this isn’t about fixing engines or running diagnostics. Instead, you’ll safely and securely install specialist equipment that supports vital surveillance work.

“You enjoy finding better ways to do things, and here you’ll have ample opportunities to do just that. Whether you’re testing electrical systems or refining build standards, you’ll play a key role in enhancing how the team operates.

“That same proactive mindset carries through when you’re working independently on projects, contributing to design, fabrication, planning, and installation at every stage. You’ll also communicate clearly with customers to understand what they need, ways of working and potential areas of improvement.

“Based in a workshop within a close-knit team, you’ll enjoy a friendly and collaborative working environment, as well as support from the wider department. Though remote working isn’t an option for this role, there is some flexibility around start and finish times – we understand the importance of a work-life balance, and we’ll support you with yours.”

The ideal candidate is an “adaptable and effective problem-solver” who will bring “curiosity, initiative, and a genuine desire to keep growing”.

In a video posted on the agency’s official Instagram, anonymous technicians were seen feeding wires through dashboards and fastening bolts.

The caption read: “Tinker Tailor “Solder” Spy “Thanks to our skilled technicians, you’d never know about the surveillance equipment hidden inside our vehicles.

“If you have a City & Guilds qualification in engineering, electrical systems, or vehicle mechanical systems, or can demonstrate equivalent experience, tap the link in the bio to find out more.”

Anyone wanting to work for MI5 now has to apply through their website just like any other civil service job.

The agency are keen to dispel the myth that agents are only recruited by a ‘tap on the shoulder’.

Earlier this year the intelligence service also revealed they were hiring carpenters who could help build spy equipment.

An advert for a “Property Specialist – Carpenter Multi-Skilled Tradesperson”, appeared on their website with a starting salary of £37,396.

The person was required to “provide specialist building trade services for MI5”, including carpentry, joinery, minor electrical works, and plastering, according the job advertisement.

“This is a tradesperson role unlike any other,” it adds.

“It’s dynamic – requiring you to react quickly to change as your team provides a 24/7 service to keep the country safe.”
