Diane Keaton struggled to sell $27.5m LA dream mansion before taking property off the market just days before her death

DIANE Keaton attempted to sell her Los Angeles dream home – worth more than $27 million – for months before taking it off the market just days before she died, The U.S. Sun can reveal.

The Hollywood legend died at home over the weekend at 79 after a short illness, according to reports.

She is survived by her two children, daughter Dexter, 29, and son Duke, 25.

Diane first purchased her five-bedroom, seven-bathroom home in 2011 for $4.7 million, according to details of the deed obtained by The U.S. Sun.

In 2016, she took out a mortgage for $3 million with City National Bank, and a second for the same price in 2023 with Citibank.

Diane reportedly spent years renovating it, eventually writing a book about the home, The House that Pinterest Built.

In the book, she said the reason she bought the property was because her mother read her the children’s tale, The Three Little Pigs, as a child.

She was inspired by the story, referencing the third pig’s “indestructible home,” and knew she wanted to live in a house “made of bricks” when she was an adult.

It was briefly listed back in 2011, but the actress then continued to live in her “dream home” for almost a decade before putting it on the market in March as her health declined.

But after six months, it still hadn’t sold, and it was delisted on September 24, just two weeks before her death.

The unique 9,206-square-foot mansion is in a community on the border of Brentwood and the Pacific Palisades.

It was built with 75,000 reclaimed clay bricks that the actress personally selected from Chicago and had an industrial chic style.

NOTABLE FIGURE

Diane was born in Los Angeles and often accompanied her real estate agent father on visits to open houses.

In the 1960s, she lived in New York and pursued acting before returning to Los Angeles, but she spent years buying houses, renovating, and selling them, as often as once a year.

Her hobby made her a notable figure in the real estate world, and she was a big fan of interior design.

California property records also show she also owned a $1.1 million three-bed, two-bath house in Monrovia, along with a two-bed, three-bath condo in central Los Angeles, worth $839,100.

She is believed to own other property throughout the U.S.

Diane once joked she never really “lands” anywhere despite spending so much time on her properties, often historic homes.

But later in life, she settled in her Brentwood house and enjoyed her time there.

In her book about the home, she wrote, “If you want to explore. If you love to see. If you’re looking to look; this book is an example of a home made from the gifts of other people’s addictive yearnings for the perfect home, with the perfect landscape and the perfect interior.

“It illustrates my choices of your choices. Who knows, you might find one of your pins here. You might smile. You might shake your head and say, ‘This isn’t what I had in mind.’ You might think: ‘Hey that’s my kitchen. She copied my kitchen.’

“But the truth is, as much as I tried, I could never entirely recreate the light-filled photograph of a kitchen that led the way to the journey that brought me here. No one can.”

“An icon of style, humor and comedy. Brilliant. What a person.”

The First Wives Club co-star Bette Midler said: “The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died.

“I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me.”

Fellow actress at Book Club co-star Mary Steenburge said: “Diane was magic.

Film director Paul Feig said: “I was so honored to call Diane Keaton a friend.

“She was an amazingly kind and creative person who also just happened to be a Hollywood legend.

“She has been taken from us far too soon. We will miss you, Diane.”

Speaking about her time in the neighborhood, a source previously told PEOPLE: “She lived in Brentwood for many years.

“She loved her neighborhood. Up until just a few months ago, she’d walk her dog every day.

“She was usually dressed the same, with a hat and her signature sunglasses, regardless of the weather.”

They added, “She was always very nice, funny, and chatty. She’d talk to her dog like he was a person.

“She was eccentric and had this old-school Hollywood aura. She was very, very special.”

She is best known for her roles in The Godfather, Manhattan, and Annie Hall, for which she won the Oscar for Best Actress in 1978.

She boasted three other Academy Award nominees in the same category across three separate decades.

Diane won a British Academy Film Award and two Golden Globe Awards during her career.

She also received the AFI Life Achievement Award and was nominated for a Tony Award for her work on stage

Last year, she released her debut holiday single First Christmas and told fans she “couldn’t believe it’s finally here”.

A spokesperson on behalf of the Keaton family confirmed to PEOPLE that she died in California.

In a statement, they said, “There are no further details at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness.”
