Everyone thinks Charli XCX’s outfit was a Taylor Swift dig, but the truth is way more interesting

Stan Twitter is once again up in arms, this time over Charli XCX’s choice of outfit and what may or may not have been a pointed jab at Taylor Swift on SNL.

Following the anticlimactic release of The Life of a Showgirl, which boasted what many deemed as a Charli XCX diss track, people have been camping out to wait for more beef in the Charli versus Taylor Swift saga.

So far, the only thing we’ve seen is Charli being back in the studio, but people on Twitter are convinced that her Saturday Night Live appearance carried a gentle dig at Taylor.

Role Model was the musical guest in the most recent episode of SNL, where he performed his addictive track Sally, When The Wine Runs Out. As we know, various people have taken on the mantle of Sally for his shows, including Renée Rapp, Bowen Yang, Troye Sivan, Kate Hudson, Hilary Duff, Natalie Portman, and now Charli XCX.

Sporting a black leather miniskirt, sunglasses, and a printed tee, Charli danced around to the song as she was expected to do. But – and admittedly it’s a stretch – people on Twitter clocked that her t-shirt was printed with Max’s Kansas City. Simply a fun shirt, or a dig at Taylor Swift’s soon-to-be hubby’s football team? Try those hand chops the Swifties are always doing, and you decide.

“OK, and how long has Charli been going around and talking s**t about Taylor? SHE’S too old to be doing this,” one person wrote on Twitter.

Another said: “Iconic cameo and that ‘Boring Barbie’ top is the petty cherry on top!”

The tweets only got more deranged from there, so in a bid to quell the rising Swiftie storm, let’s unpack what actually happened.

If not for Taylor Swift, why did Charli XCX wear that shirt on SNL?

Out of context, the image of Charli XCX in the shirt might seem like a thinly veiled dig at Taylor Swift, emphasis on thinly. The reality of the situation is much more mundane and boils down to the fact that Role Model sported the exact same t-shirt during the SNL introductory monologue.

It’s meant to be a cheeky easter egg, a naughty reference, not something to be unpacked by a corner of Twitter that spends wayyyy too much time on the internet.

Outside of that, another person pointed out: “Role Model’s 2024 album is called Kansas Anymore and the shirt actually references a bar at 213 Park Ave in NYC.”
