South African motorists could see a notable decrease in fuel prices in early November, with petrol expected to drop by up to 60 cents per litre and diesel by 24 cents, according to the latest figures from the Central Energy Fund (CEF).
The anticipated cuts follow a combination of stabilising global oil prices and a strengthening rand, which have contributed to an under-recovery in local fuel prices – often a precursor to lower pump rates.
The Brent Crude oil price, a key benchmark, has hovered around $67 per barrel in recent months but fell to $62 after a ceasefire announcement in Gaza last Friday, alleviating fears of supply disruptions in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, the rand’s improved performance against the US dollar has enhanced South Africa’s import dynamics, further supporting the potential fuel price relief.
Below, the latest projections as received by The South African website from the Central Energy Fund (CEF):
FUEL | PRICE CHANGE |
Petrol 93 | decrease of 60 cents |
Petrol 95 | decrease of 57 cents |
Diesel 0.05% | decrease of 22 cents |
Diesel 0.005% | decrease of 24 cents |
Illuminating Paraffin | decrease of 11 cents |
If the market conditions were to remain consistent for the remainder of the month – an unlikely scenario with the rand/dollar exchange rate fluctuating and the oil price ever changing – a decrease of 60 cents is expected for petrol 93 octane motorists and a decrease of 57 cents for 95 users.
Meanwhile, diesel motorists would see something between a 22 and 24 cents per litre decrease.
Finally, illuminating paraffin is expected to drop by 11 cents in price.
