RIP: South African rugby coach dies at 43

The rugby community at large has been rocked after news came to light that Warren Abrahams, the current coach of the Belgium’s national women’s sevens rugby team, had died in Nairobi where he was guiding the team at the Safari Sevens tournament.

Born in Durbanville in Cape Town, Abrahams represented Durbanville-Bellville and Stellenbosch University before moving into coaching, where he quickly became highly-respect for his innovative approach to the game, particularly at sevens level.

Abrahams worked with Harlequins, England Sevens and USA Rugby, before taking charge of Wales Women in 2020.

Although his exact cause of death has not been publicly confirmed, reports suggest he collapsed at Nyayo Stadium, and was treated at the scene before being rushed to a city hospital, where he later died.

Following the incident at the Safari Sevens tournament, Belgium withdrew from the annual tournament, which brings together around 20 teams from across the globe.

“Warren was so much more than a coach, he was a mentor, a leader and above all, a kind and generous human being,” the Belgium federation added.

“His smile, wisdom and calm strength he brought ton the team will never be forgotten… The team has returned to Belgium already and will continue to receive psychological support to help them process this personal loss. Our thoughts are with Warren’s family, friends, and everyone whose lives he touched.”

In a statement, the Kenya Rugby Union expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death.

“The Kenya Rugby Union deeply mourns the untimely demise of Warren Abrahams, Coach of the Belgium Ladies National Sevens Team, who passed away on Friday, 10th October, while on tour for the 2025 Safari Sevens in Nairobi,” said KRU.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire Belgian rugby fraternity during this difficult time. Warren’s passion, professionalism, and dedication to the game will be fondly remembered by all. May his soul rest in peace.”
