Gauteng police officer wanted for murder kills himself

A Gauteng police officer wanted for the alleged murder of his wife and the attempted murder of a colleague shot and killed himself during a confrontation with law enforcement in Limpopo on Sunday.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the 53-year-old sergeant, who served in the Presidential Protection Service (PPS) in Pretoria, was wanted in connection with the alleged murder of a female police officer in Pretoria on Saturday and the attempted murder of his wife in Bronkhorstspruit on Sunday.

Ledwaba said police tracking the sergeant intercepted him on the R555 road near Burgersfort, Limpopo.

POLICE CONFRONTATION TURNS DEADLY

Ledwaba said the deceased who was driving in a white Nissan van allegedly fired a shot at officers.

“The suspect allegedly fired a shot towards police officers and, when cornered, turned the firearm on himself. The firearm used was confirmed to be a state-issued service pistol,” said Ledwaba.

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe expressed concern about domestic violence incidents involving members of the SA Police Service (SAPS).

“This tragedy once again highlights the urgent need for members to seek help when facing personal difficulties. We remain committed to supporting the well-being of our members while upholding the rule of law,” said Hadebe.

Ledwaba said an inquest has been opened, and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been notified to conduct further investigations
