He was dumped out in the early rounds of another major this week, the Grand Prix of Darts, by Dirk van Duijvenbode.

And he now faces missing out on the Players Championship Finals altogether.

Van Gerwen has appeared in every edition of the tournmaent since its inception in 2009.

But he is placed outside the top 64 in the Players Championship rankings after missing several Players Championship events, and there are only four left for him to qualify.

To make matters worse, the Dutchman will miss out on two of those because he is on holiday in Dubai.

Van Gerwen said in an interview on the Darts Draait Door podcast: “I’ll be in Dubai on holiday for the last two.

“So it has to happen in those two tournaments after the Grand Prix. One way or another, I’ll have to win one.”

Van Gerwen, 38, is ranked joint 92nd after picking up just £14,500 in prize money.

However winning a single week guaranatees a prize pot of £15,000, with the runner-up collecting £10,000.

Van Gerwen needs to earn £8,000 to climb into a qualification spot.
