The Bali-alternative holiday destination set to be big next year is scrapping visas for Brits

THE bucket list destination of Sri Lanka is set to get rid of complicated visas for British travellers.

The country that’s even smaller than Ireland has revealed it has scrapped its lengthy visa for a much simpler ETA application.

For British citizens, the cost of a tourist visa to Sri Lanka had been $50 (£37.81) for a 30 day visa.

Visitors would be required to fill in a length form for entry into the country.

But now, Sri Lanka has launched the much simpler ETA at the cost of $20 (£15.02), which also allows entry for 30 days in the country.

Any visitors going on holiday, sightseeing, seeing friends and relatives, or participating in sports competitions can apply through the ETA.

It comes into effect October, 15 2025, and is being implemented to simplify entry procedures and strengthen border security.

One of the requirements of the ETA is that travellers must be able to prove they have a round trip ticket to show at the port of entry in Sri Lanka (only if you are traveling by air).

And evidence of sufficient funds to cover your expenses in Sri Lanka.

Like most ETA’s, a requirement of the application is that the visitor cannot part take in any form of employment, paid or unpaid while on their holiday.

Sri Lanka is a top trending destination of 2025, and it’s also been crowned the most beautiful island by Big 7 Travel.

Big 7 Travel announced that Sri Lanka has officially been named the most beautiful island in the world.

It’s surpassed lots of other island gems like Mo’orea in French Polynesia and the Galápagos islands.

Other mentions went to Seychelles, Madeira, Koh Lipe in Thailand and Milos in Greece.

Deputy Travel Editor Kara Godfrey took a trip to the island in 2023 and confirms that it’s incredible.

The island is full of elephant herds, tea plantations, award-winning hotels and there’s plenty of delicious, and spicy, food to enjoy.

Kara added: “You’ll easily be able to catch a cricket game as well, remaining as a huge part of the culture following the British colonization of the island.

“Brits can even drive on the left side of the road, so getting around the island by car is easy.

“Not only that, but the island also has award-winning hotels, Cape Weligama which is often named one of the best hotels in the world.”

Sri Lanka’s Colombo was also named the ‘must-photograph’ travel destination of 2019.
