Scores of mourners gathered to bid a final farewell to former minister Emmanuel Nkosinathi “Nathi” Mthethwa.
The Special Official Funeral got underway at the Dondotha Stadium in KwaMbonambi, KwaZulu-Natal, on Sunday, 12 October.
Mthethwa, who served as South Africa’s ambassador to Paris, France, was declared dead in the country on Tuesday, 30 September.
MTHETHWA REMEMBERED
Numerous political parties, including Mthethwa’s political home, the African National Congress (ANC), and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), paid tribute to him. The ANC described Mthethwa as a loyal servant of the people.
“A disciplined cadre and a builder of democratic institutions, Comrade Nathi dedicated his life to the struggle for freedom and the advancement of our democracy,” the party said.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to deliver the eulogy at the funeral. ANC NEC member Lindiwe Ntshalintshali described Mthethwa as a humble and disciplined leader.
“We have lost an organiser, we have lost a diplomat, we have lost a cadre. Hamba kahle, Nathi,” she said.
Mthethwa held several prominent political roles during his career, including Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture; Minister of Police; Member of Parliament; Chairperson of the Minerals and Energy Portfolio Committee; and Chief Whip of the ANC in 2008. He also served on the Board of Directors for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee.
INVESTIGATIONS CONTINUE
Meanwhile, investigations into Mthethwa’s death continue. Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia recently announced that a team of South African Police Service (SAPS) members will be deployed to France. The team will work closely with French law enforcement authorities to ensure the circumstances surrounding Mthethwa’s death are thoroughly and transparently investigated.
Cachalia expressed his sadness over Mthethwa’s passing and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to uncovering the truth.
“We will offer all necessary support to our counterparts in France and remain in close contact with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) throughout the process,” said the minister.
