- The NPA says it is disappointed by the Johannesburg High Court’s decision to grant bail to alleged contract killer Katiso Molefe.
- Molefe, accused of orchestrating DJ Sumbody’s 2022 murder, was released on R400 000 bail.
- The NPA insists it has a strong case and plans to oppose the bail appeal.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has expressed its readiness to oppose the bail appeal application of alleged contract killer Katiso “KT” Molefe, while voicing strong disappointment over the Johannesburg High Court’s decision to grant him bail.
The NPA says it came as a surprise that Molefe was granted bail, describing the ruling as deeply disappointing.
The Johannesburg High Court granted the controversial businessman bail of R400 000 on Friday, 10 October 2025.
Molefe is accused of orchestrating the 2022 murder of popular DJ and club owner Oupa Sefofa, affectionately known as DJ Sumbody, and his bodyguards. He is also facing charges related to the 2024 murder of whistleblower Armand Swart.
During his arrest, Patriotic Alliance Deputy President Kenny Kunene was found at Molefe’s Sandton home. Kunene has since been cleared of any wrongdoing and reinstated as the Transport MMC in the City of Johannesburg.
Molefe and another controversial businessman, Vusi “Cat” Matlala, have also been implicated at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry as members of a criminal syndicate known as “The Big Five”, allegedly involved in drugs, human trafficking, and contract killings, among other crimes.
NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said the authority believes it has a watertight case against Molefe.
“Once all relevant material has been presented and the matter heard, the court will be in a position to announce its decision as this court has done. However, every case will be treated on its own merits. We don’t want to presume what will happen in the Matlala bail plea, but as the state, we want to assure the public that we are ready to deal with such an application,” said Mjonondwane.
She added that the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court had correctly found that the seriousness of the charges against Molefe did not warrant his release on bail.
However, Judge Brad Wanless of the Johannesburg High Court ruled that there was insufficient evidence to prove Molefe would evade trial.
Mjonondwane said the NPA was disappointed by Judge Wanless’s verdict, emphasizing that the state firmly believes Molefe poses both a flight risk and a danger to society.
