Being back on campus means that it is officially the best season for fashion: Autumn. The sun is still out, but there’s a slight chill in the air – perfect for an aesthetic photo in front of orange-leaved trees.
It’s the season of pretending to study at a cafe just to get your hands on something pumpkin-spiced. Halloween decorations are going up three weeks early, and cosiness is now a fashion statement. Here’s what you can wear to still look chic while staying comfy this autumn:
1. Trench coats
It’s time to put away your lightweight, beige, spring trench coat. Instead, pull out your slightly heavier, chocolate brown or black trench coat. She’s a reliable staple, and the star of the look without being overbearing. And she’s just rah enough to be “Exetah”.
2. Cosy knits
Whether it’s cardigans, jumpers, dresses, or skirts, it’s the season of the knit. Make them as oversized as possible, don’t let so much as a fingertip poke out the sleeves. Layer knit over knit and don’t worry about overdoing it.
3. Floaty skirts
Ah, the forever versatile cotton maxi skirt isn’t going anywhere just because summer’s over. Just pair with the aforementioned knit and you’ve got a look tried and tested by half the Exeter student body. The perfect ensemble for an October pint in Impy’s beer garden (and a few cheeky candid photos).
4. Big scarves
And when I say big… to wear it like a true Exeter girly, you need that thing trailing behind you up Cardiac Hill. Plus, it’s a cute accessory for any outfit! Keep it neutral or throw in a fun pattern, it’s win-win with a big scarf.
5. Chunky boots
This one might seem a bit more niche, but whether it’s a pair of docs stomping through the Forum, or calf-length faux-leather, I’m seeing an upsurge in boots on campus. Pair with the floaty skirt-knitted jumper combo, and you’ve got the peak cool girl autumn fit.
6. Anything plaid
When do lumberjacks come out of hibernation to do their work, according to any cheesy movie? Autumn. What do lumberjacks wear? Plaid. Need I say more?
A classic plaid shirt, sherpa jacket, or even a pair of trousers if we’re channelling our late-90s Rachel Green era. A plaid pattern in your outfit immediately reveals your appreciation for seasonal fashion.
7. Wax jackets
Let’s not forget how wonderfully rural Exeter is, with Dartmoor right on our doorstep – perfect for bracing country walks. And at Streatham, we’re lucky to have one of the most beautiful and botanically interesting campuses in the UK!
What could be better than getting out into nature, blending in with the locals, and staying warm and dry with a wax jacket? Just because you’re at Exeter, it doesn’t mean you have to splurge on a jacket either – there’s plenty of budget options that still look the part.
Autumn means something different to everyone, whether that’s locking in to be an absolute academic weapon, visiting a different pumpkin patch every weekend, cosy movie nights with your housemates, or striding out across the moors. However you spend it, now you can do it all looking your seasonal best!
