Ramaphosa grants late ambassador Nathi Mthethwa special official funeral

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that the late Ambassador Emmanuel Nkosinathi “Nathi” Mthethwa will receive a special official funeral category two in KwaMbonambi, KwaZulu-Natal, on 12 October 2025.

RAMAPHOSA HONOURS MTHEHTWA WITH STATE FUNERAL

Mthethwa passed away on 30 September 2025 in Paris, France, aged 58, while serving as South Africa’s ambassaor to France.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS AND PUBLIC SERVICE

Before his diplomatic appointment in December 2023, Mthethwa spent 15 years in Cabinet.

His portfolios included Sport, Arts and Culture; Police; and Safety and Security.

In statement, Ramaphosa said Mthethwa’s leadership career reflected deep political commitment and public service.

CONDOLENCES AND NATIONAL APPRECIATION FOR LATE NATHI MTHETHWA

On behalf of the government and the country, Ramaphosa extended his deepest condolences to Mthethwa’s wife, Philisiwe Buthelezi, and the extended Mthethwa and Buthelezi families.

He also reaffirmed the nation’s gratitude for Mthethwa’s many roles and contributions.

SPECIAL OFFICIAL CATEGORY TWO FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS AND CEREMONIAL DETAILS

The funeral will include ceremonial elements led by the South African Police Service.

The president further directed that the National Flag fly at half-mast from Thursday, 9 October 2025, until the evening of the funeral.
