The late Ambassador Nkosinathi “Nathi” Mthethwa is set to be honoured with a Special Official Funeral (Category 2) at KwaMbonambi, KwaZulu-Natal, this Sunday, 12 October 2025.

President Cyril Ramaphosa made the announcement in a statement released by spokesperson Vincent Magwenya on Wednesday, 8 October 2025.

The Category 2 funeral will entail ceremonial elements performed by the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The President has also directed that the National Flag be flown at half-mast from Thursday morning, 9 October 2025, until the evening of the funeral on Sunday, 12 October 2025.

Passing and Repatriation

Mthethwa, who was South Africa’s ambassador to France, passed away in Paris on Tuesday, 30 September 2025, at the age of 58.

According to reports, the former Sports, Arts and Culture Minister’s body was found by a security guard in the courtyard of the luxury Hyatt hotel, where he had booked a room on the 22nd floor.

French authorities are currently investigating the incident.

The repatriation of his remains is underway, with his body expected to land at OR Tambo International Airport on Friday, 10 October.

President Ramaphosa reiterated his deepest condolences to Ambassador Mthethwa’s wife, Philisiwe Buthelezi, and their extended families.

“The President assures the families of the nation’s appreciation for the diverse roles in which Ambassador Mthethwa served the country,” the statement reads.
