But along the route, they were faced with four locked gates which had a question or puzzle that needed to be answered correctly to release a key to open the gate.

If they managed to set it on fire within the allocated time, they would be awarded £15,000 to their prize fund.

But just minutes into the task, TV presenter Clare Balding made a huge mistake that could cost her her place in the competition.

As they approached the first gate, the group’s first question was: “How many characters die in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet combined?

As the they tried to work it out, Clare began dialling in various guesses on the combination lock.

But in haste, she accidentally locked in the answer, meaning they could not try again.

Holding her head in her hands, a devastated Clare screamed: “No! Why did? I didn’t realise I locked it in. Sorry!”

“I’ve made a complete mistake because I didn’t realise that was locking it in,” Clare told the group.

In a confessional, she said: “It’s over even before it’s started, even before they’ve got a chance to give a sensible guess.”

Back at the castle, Tom Daly was left trying to suss out who the traitors are.

Earlier in the episode, Claudia picked her three traitors – Alan Carr, Jonathan Ross and Cat Burns.

Unbeknownst to Tom that Alan is a traitor, the diver said: “The traitors wouldn’t have just met to say hi.

“There would have been some kind of ulterior motive behind it and I think there must be something around see how many shields you can strip from the group, either by getting things wrong or slowing them down enough so you have to use shields to get through the game.”

Alan was quick to use this as an opportunity to shift focus onto Clare.

Alan gasped and said: “Clare Balding,” to which Tom said: “You said it not me.”

Alan continued to plant the seed, saying: “She pulled that lever. No, she looked gutted.

“She did but was it an ‘oh’, or was it ohhh,” Tom said as he speculated Clare had deliberately sabotaged the task.

Alan said: “It can’t be Clare, a traitor would come up with a plot like you have with poor old Clare who hasn’t done anything wrong.”

Tom asked: “Are you trying to help her?”

Alan laughed awkwardly and said: “Leave her alone,” while wiping beads of sweat from his forehead.

TRAITORS VS FAITHFUL

The celebrities were thrown in the deep end as they battled it out in a grave digging challenge just minutes into the launch episode.

It was then time for Claudia to make her traitors selection.

After a tense wait at the roundtable room, Claudia touched the shoulders of Jonathan Ross, Alan Carr and Cat Burns – meaning they were the chosen ones, while the rest will become Faithfuls.

But it didn’t take long before Alan to slip up.

Alan immediately began telling the rest of the group that he thought Celia Imrie and Claire Balding were the traitors.

In a confessional, Jonathan admitted he’s going to need to be “nimble” if he stands a chance of getting away with it.

While Kate Garraway tried to work out who the traitors were, putting the spotlight on Cat.

While comedian Joe Wilkinson left Alan sweating as he quizzed him, but telly host Alan just laughed it off.

One viewer wrote: “Alan as a traitor is such a hilarious move from claudia . he’s panicking already.”

A second posted: “Alan is going to have a breakdown.”

A third said: “Alan Carr is giving me anxiety,” while this person wrote: “Alan Carr is gonna give himself away too easily I reckon.”

This viewer shared: “Alan Carr is going to give it away for sure. The other two will throw him under the bus.”

Another added; “Alan will give himself away in 5 mins.”

Claudia then revealed that their first murder will be in plain sight – with the victim being revealed tomorrow night.
