From start to finish: All the drama between Selena Gomez and Francia Raisa, and where they stand

Selena Gomez and Francia Raisa’s friendship has been through loads of ups and downs, from life-saving surgeries to social media shade and, most recently, a very noticeable wedding absence. Basically, it’s been a whole rollercoaster. People have followed their story for years, and there’s been so much speculation about whether they’re still close.

So, here’s a rundown of all the drama between Selena Gomez and Francia Raisa, and where things seem to stand now.

It all started with a kidney and a lot of love

Back in 2017, Selena was seriously ill from lupus, an autoimmune disease that had damaged her kidneys. Francia, who she had met over a decade earlier at a charity event, didn’t hesitate. She volunteered to donate one of her kidneys. The operation was intense and life-threatening: At one point, Selena’s artery even burst. Both women later admitted that the surgery and recovery took a serious toll on their mental health.

After the transplant, they were inseparable, at least publicly. Selena posted a photo of the two holding hands in hospital beds with the caption, “There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.”

Francia shared the same photo, adding that she was “beyond grateful” to have not only saved Selena’s life but also changed her own life in the process. In interviews, she made it clear that donating the kidney came from the “genuine kindness of [her] heart” and that “no one forced [her] to do anything.”

Then came the documentary and that ‘interesting’ comment

Fast-forward to 2022, when Selena released her Apple TV documentary My Mind & Me, chronicling her struggles with fame, health, and mental illness, but Francia wasn’t mentioned at all.

Around the same time, Selena told Rolling Stone, “I never fit in with a cool group of girls that were celebrities. My only friend in the industry really is Taylor [Swift].”

Francia commented on an Instagram post about the interview with just one word, “Interesting.” People immediately assumed she felt snubbed. Selena later replied under a TikTok video, saying, “Sorry I didn’t mention every person I know.”

The drama didn’t last forever, but it did create a visible rift. Francia unfollowed Selena on Instagram, and everyone assumed the friendship was over, though both women later said there was never any real “beef.”

Rumours and reconciliations

Over the next year, loads of rumours circulated. Some claimed Francia was angry at Selena for her lifestyle choices after the transplant, while others said they’d reconciled.

In December 2023, Francia told USA Today, “We hadn’t spoken much in six years. Especially [in] the last year, we didn’t speak at all… We’ve never really had beef with each other. Nothing happened, and if you ask either of us, we don’t know what happened, but we needed that time apart. Then when you come back together, you’re better people.”

By 2023, it appeared that they were on good terms again. Selena posted a sweet birthday message for Francia, which “really surprised” her, and Francia attended Selena’s Rare Impact Fund event. They even spent time doing casual things together, like spray tans and visiting old favourite restaurants.

Francia also reminded people that organ donation isn’t about lifelong emotional debt, “If you give a dollar to charity, you don’t call to ask what they’re doing with it… It’s a donation and it’s something nice that I was able to do. I am grateful that I am alive and I can say that I have saved a life.”

Now, apparently, Francia wasn’t invited to the wedding that got everyone talking again

Very recently, Selena married producer Benny Blanco in Santa Barbara in a star-studded ceremony attended by around 170 family and friends. Taylor Swift gave an emotional speech, Ed Sheeran performed, and the guest list included Paris Hilton, Zoe Saldaña, Cara Delevingne, and Selena’s Only Murders in the Building co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short.

One name that wasn’t on the list is rumoured to be Francia Raisa. Instead, she posted a video on Instagram dancing in Los Angeles with former Dancing With the Stars pro Sasha Farber while the wedding was happening. People immediately noticed and flooded the comments asking if she’d been invited. Neither Selena nor Francia publicly addressed the situation.

Now, shortly after the wedding, Francia has finally broken her silence at a bookstore event, calling all the rumours of a feud “just rumours.” She wished Selena well and clarified her perspective on the kidney donation.

So, where do they stand now?

From everything we can see, Selena and Francia aren’t as close as they once were, but there’s no public feud either. Francia has made it clear that she holds no grudges, and Selena hasn’t thrown any shade back.

They might never go back to their “sisters forever” phase, but it seems both women have moved on, grown up, and accepted that not every friendship lasts forever, even one built on something as massive as a kidney.

Basically, it’s complicated but peaceful.
