Chinese car giant launches SUV that’s £60k cheaper than Range Rover’s version

CHINA has launched a new potential rival to Range Rover at half the price.

The electric SUV is set to sell at £43,700 or £58,000, based on current exchange rates, while a new electric Range Rover will set you back £105,000.

Nio claims its new ES8 will “redefine luxury” and is an upgrade to the first ES8 released in 2018.

The SUV is seven inches longer than the Range Rover equivalent and comes with several upgrade such as a new 900-volt architecture.

Motorists could get the new model for £30,000 if they use NIO’s battery subscription service.

The title “electric Range Rover” comes from TikTokker Jeremy Lueck who got to see the new car in person.

He raved about the new wheels: “40,000 orders in just 24 hours. I never thought a $56k Chinese car would be this popular…this car is huge.

“Nearly 5,3 metres, All-wheel drive, in total 700 horsepower. And it supports battery swap. In three minutes, you’ve got a fully charged battery.”

The challenge from Nio comes with a spacious 550 litre boot but the real luxuries are reserved for the rear passengers.

Zero-gravity chairs, a 21.4-inch mini LED TV and to round it all off a mini-fridge, making long journeys something to look forward to.

The dashboard has a screen running all the way to the passenger side said Jeremy.

He continued: “And of course, Nio cars have always got this voice assistant NOMI.

“Down below we’ve got two wireless charging pads, two cup holders.”

Nio described the car on their website as having “craftsmanship in every detail.”

“The All-New ES8 sets a new benchmark for flagship performance with an intelligent, all-terrain adaptive chassis that delivers greater power, smarter control, and all-round comfort and confidence” the car-maker added.

The release comes as the Chinese carmaker has announced plans to expand into Europe with seven markets expected to go live before summer 2026.

For a smaller model, Nio also has an electric sudan which it claimed can rocket from 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds.

The ET8 has a maximum range of 621 miles, meanwhile the Tesla Model S is left behind with a driving range of 404 miles.

This model again employs a swappable battery allowing drivers to be on the road in mere minutes.

Launched in November 2014, the Chinese car manufacturers now has a market cap of £14.10 billion.
