There are few things more humbling than visiting Scotland, especially if you’re an international celebrity ordering from a chippy that doesn’t know your name. That’s exactly what happened to Justin Bieber, who strolled into Cromars Fish and Chips in St Andrews this week and decided to sing his order to the staff.
The team behind the counter had “absolutely no idea” who the scruffy-looking lad serenading them about chips actually was.

“To tell you the truth, we had absolutely no idea who it was,” owner Charles Mair told the Daily Mail.
“We were very, very busy because of the Dunhill Cup event at Gleneagles. So we were rushing around when all of a sudden this customer started tapping his hands on the counter and singing the menu.”
Charles said the mystery man was “very charming and nice” and happily waited for his freshly cooked fish like everyone else. He ordered haddock, by the way, with an Innes and Gunn beer.
“He was by himself but had two other friends with him who were helping him with the order,” he added. “And then we actually realised who it was. Half of St Andrews knew who it was so we got extremely busy.”
Once the penny dropped, the place apparently turned into a mini tourist attraction. Bieber had been in town after golfing at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. He later shared a few photos of his Scottish adventures, including one showing him outside Cromars clutching a pint.

According to Charles, the 31-year-old waited patiently for his food and left: “He took it away because there was no space inside unfortunately. We have a takeaway licence, so he was allowed to do that.”
After his chippy cameo, Bieber reportedly headed off on a quiet Dundee pub crawl, where locals spotted him playing an arcade machine and sipping a pint in the corner. He’s just a humble lad looking for a decent chippy.
