Huge car brand discontinues EV after four years as it’s overshadowed by rivals

THE MERCEDES-Benz EQB looks set to be discontinued globally, with production shifting to fulfil only existing orders, according to reports.

The luxurious all-electric SUV is expected to be quietly phased out by the end of 2025, as the German brand shifts focus to an exciting new successor.

The upcoming GLB with EQ Technology will bring faster charging, improved efficiency and modern styling – all seen as an upgrade on the EQB[/caption]

According to InsideEVs, a Mercedes-Benz spokesperson confirmed that the EQB has “reached the end of its planned lifecycle and therefore will not be offered in the US or Canada after model year 2025.”

Sun Motors has reached out to Mercedes-Benz to confirm whether these plans will also affect the EQB in the UK, especially as it still appears to be available on the UK configurator.

Meanwhile, JESMB, a German news site focused on Mercedes, has reported that while the EQB is no longer available for custom orders in its home market, there are still stock vehicles available for purchase.

The site also claims that Mercedes’ Kecskemét plant in Hungary is already preparing for the production of new models, including the GLB EQ – the EQB’s successor.

Currently referred to as the “GLB with EQ Technology,” this new model is expected to debut in early 2026, alongside the internal combustion GLB.

It will feature Mercedes’ new MMA platform, designed specifically for EVs, offering significant upgrades, including a cutting-edge 800V electrical system, faster charging speeds and improved efficiency.

The new GLB will retain the boxy “baby G-Wagen” design seen on other models but will include modern touches such as a blanked-off grille, updated lighting elements, and a revamped interior – which is expected to feature AI integration.

In addition to the all-electric models, hybridised ICE variants and high-performance AMG options will also be available.

In every way, the new model is expected to be a significant improvement on the EQB, which hasn’t always been seen as a standout choice among drivers.

Indeed, the EQB was often overshadowed by other electric SUVs, with the Tesla Model Y widely regarded as the benchmark in the segment.

The Audi Q4 e-tron, for example, is viewed as a strong all-rounder, offering a premium interior and competitive range, while the BMW iX1 caters to those seeking a sportier driving experience.

That said, the EQB found favour with families thanks to its spacious interior and optional third row of seats.

However, its reliance on a modified combustion engine platform ultimately drew criticism, limiting its performance in key areas such as charging speed and efficiency.

With the EQB seemingly nearing the end of its lifecycle, the EQS will remain Mercedes’ only option for a seven-seater EV – at least until the arrival of the GLB EQ.
