The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has confirmed the arrest of 157 motorists for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) of alcohol during a single week of intensified operations.
The arrests were made between Monday, 29 September 2025, and Sunday, 5 October 2025, across all regions of the City of Johannesburg, highlighting the persistent danger posed by intoxicated drivers.
JMPD Acting Chief of Police, Acting Commissioner Eldred Fortein, commended the officers for their vigilance and issued a stern warning to the public.
“The arrest of 157 individuals in a single week for a preventable offence is deeply concerning. Every single person arrested made a conscious choice to endanger not only their own life but the lives of innocent pedestrians and other motorists,” said Acting Commissioner Fortein.
The Commissioner added that the high numbers resulted from officers being “highly visible,” conducting intensified roadblocks and proactive patrols.
“If you drink and drive in Johannesburg, you will be caught, and you will face the full might of the law,” he warned.
All arrested suspects are set to be processed through the judicial system to face charges.
