  • The City of Tshwane has issued a Yellow Level 2 alert for severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall from 14:00 to 21:59 this evening, Monday, 6 October 2025.
  • The primary hazards include localised flooding, damaging winds, excessive lightning, and the potential for power outages and structural fires.
  • Residents are urged to stay indoors, avoid metal objects, and never attempt to cross flooded roads as emergency services remain on high alert.

The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department has issued a strong warning, appealing to residents to exercise caution following a Yellow Level 2 alert for severe thunderstorms across the region.

The South African Weather Service forecast indicates a high chance of rainfall, predicting the adverse weather will affect most parts of Gauteng, including Tshwane, this afternoon, Monday, 6 October 2025. The system, driven by a cut-off low-pressure system, is expected to persist from 14:00 until approximately 21:59.

Potential disruptions

The severe thunderstorms pose several risks to the community and infrastructure:

  • Localised Flooding is likely due to heavy downpours, particularly in low-lying areas and on vulnerable roads, causing traffic disruptions and reduced visibility.
  • The weather may bring large amounts of small hail, damaging winds, and excessive lightning, increasing the risk of structural fires and damage to property, especially roofs.
  • Motorists face the threat of accidents due to slippery conditions and flooded roads.
  • Localised service disruptions, including power outages, are possible due to infrastructure damage.

Key safety advice

Tshwane Emergency Services have reiterated crucial safety tips:

  • Stay indoors and avoid metal objects, such as fences or power lines, which can conduct electricity.
  • Do not seek shelter under isolated trees or tall objects.
  • Never attempt to cross flooded roads, bridges, or swollen streams.
  • Refrain from outdoor activities like fishing or golfing, as metal equipment can attract lightning.

The Emergency Services Department confirmed it will remain on high alert throughout the city to respond swiftly to any emergencies. Residents can report fire or rescue incidents by calling 107 (toll-free) or 012 358 6300 / 6400.
