This past Sunday, 5 October 2025, thousands of South Africans made their way to the SunBet Arena to see their favourite R&B star, Summer Walker, perform live.
The In The City concert, announced as early as April this year, had Alternative R&B fans eagerly anticipating Walker’s performance in South Africa. However, the US singer was unable to complete even half of her set, leaving many fans disappointed.
Shortly after the show, the 29-year-old took to social media to explain that she had planned to perform a full one-hour set but was instructed by the promoters to cut it short.
“South Africa, I am so sorry. I don’t know what happened. I got kicked off the stage. They changed my time three times, and when I got on stage, I thought I was about to do my full set,” she said.
“They were yelling in my ear to cut my entire set halfway. I didn’t even get to go down and interact with the crowd like I usually do because they were telling me to wrap it up. That wasn’t my intention. I was prepared to do my full hour. The police, fire marshal, and promoters said they would get fined if I didn’t get off stage.”
Walker also invited a fan, who reportedly sold their house to attend her show, to the after-party. She reiterated that she was on time for her set and promised fans a full performance the next time she returns to South Africa.
Summer Walker is a Grammy-nominated American singer and songwriter known for her soulful R&B sound. She rose to fame with her debut commercial mixtape Last Day of Summer (2018), featuring the hit single Girls Need Love, which later earned a remix with Drake and marked her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100.
Her debut studio album Over It (2019) was a critical and commercial success, peaking at number two on the Billboard 200 and setting a record for the biggest debut streaming week for a female R&B artist. The album has since been certified triple platinum.
Her follow-up album Still Over It (2021) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, cementing her status as one of the most influential voices in modern R&B.
