adidas is kicking off the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a groundbreaking reveal: TRIONDA, a smart match ball that features cutting-edge AI tech.
Named TRIONDA, with “Tri” representing host nations USA, Canada, and Mexico, this FIFA World Cup match ball is embedded with AI-powered tech designed to assist referees in making smarter, real-time decisions during the match.
The data feeds directly into the VAR system, leveraging AI to enhance accuracy in on-field officiating. At the heart of this is adidas’ Connected Ball Technology: a 500Hz IMU motion sensor chip now side‑mounted inside one of the four panels for improved performance. Counter‑balanced panels ensure stability, while the system tracks each touch in real time — giving referees and VAR unprecedented insight, smoother replays, and faster decisions on offsides, handballs, and more.
Design-wise, the ball features a triangle-themed layout with fluid patterns, showcasing the colors and symbols of the three host nations—USA, Mexico, and Canada. A star, maple leaf, and eagle highlight each, with gold touches giving it that championship glow.
According to Sam Handy, General Manager at adidas Football, “with TRIONDA, every detail has an impact.” He highlighted how “the embossed textures, layered graphics and bold colours make the ball stand out instantly,” saying it “creates a design that feels alive in your hands.” Handy emphasised that it’s “the most visually playful FIFA World Cup ball we’ve ever created – a piece of craftsmanship built for the biggest stage,” and one that “makes you want to hold it, admire it, and above all, play with it.”
The Trionda League Ball is now available to cop via adidas.co.za, with prices ranging from R449 – R1399.
