Three Sober October tips that will help you save money while supporting a great cause

SOBER October is here and it’s a time to reset your health . . .  and save cash.

The average household spends nearly £800 a year on booze, so giving up for a month could put around £65 back in the budget.

At the same time, you could sign up to Macmillan Cancer Support’s Sober October challenge and make money for a great cause.

Raise your glass to these ideas . . .

THINK NO-DRINK: Plan before you start.

Remind yourself why you want to go booze-free for a month, whether that’s to save money, boost your health or raise funds for charity.

Consider what you’ll drink instead of your usual tipple.

Put the money you save in a jar and use it for a treat when you complete the challenge.

Note down how you feel through the month, celebrating better sleep or wonderful willpower.

Add on another good habit, such as gentle exercise, for an extra win.

MARVELLOUS MOCKTAILS: To replace that feeling of going without, create your own booze-free cocktails.

To enjoy an autumn warmer for four, pour 500ml cloudy apple juice, 250ml fiery ginger beer, a cinnamon stick, two cloves, a sprinkle of ginger and half a sliced orange into a pan.

Heat gently and simmer for five minutes, then stir in a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup.

For something more celebratory for one, half fill a champagne flute with cranberry juice and a squeeze of lime juice, then top up with alcohol-free fizzy wine.

Drop in a berries for decoration.

SWAP AND SAVE: Give no-alcohol alternatives a go. Use a Tesco Clubcard to get Gordon’s 0% for £12 instead of £15.

You can also use it to get four cans of Brooklyn Brewery Special Effects alcohol-free lager for £4, not £4.45.

With a Morrisons More card, Freixenet alcohol-free rose is £4.50 instead of £5.

Drop into Waitrose for Belvoir Farm non-alcoholic lime and yuzu juice mojito, £2.50 down from £3.65.
