Bakers Choice Assorted biscuits have officially hit the shelves in bulk in time for the start of the festive season. The traditional treat’s hiked prices, due to inflation, have been a sore point for many South African consumers.
BAKERS CHOICE ASSORTED BISCUIT PRICES SHOCK CONSUMERS
On social media, South Africans have noted how retailers are now advertising bulk boxes of Bakers Choice Assorted biscuits in time for the start of the festive season.
Depending on where you shop, a box of 1kg biscuits can cost around R200, while a 2kg box can fetch up to R500!
One TikToker – @quintisjacobs – shared his shock at the prices of his favourite “Christmas cookies”.
Jokingly blaming the government, he said: “Where’s the GNU? I thought [their job] was to make the country a better place. Where’s Cyrril, where’s John Steenhuisen, where’s Gayton? Why isn’t anyone doing something about this?”.
He added: “This is going to be a hard Christmas for a lot of people in South Africa”.
In the comment section, many fellow consumers agreed that purchasing the traditional treat was now unaffordable.
One commented, “I’m baking my own,” while another added, ” Never buy that!”
A third shared: “I’d rather buy electricity units than this”.

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW?
Apart from the prices, many consumers have expressed dissatisfaction with Bakers or the Bakers Man’s decision to discontinue fan favourites in the Choice Assorted collection.
One includes the omission of the Romany Tarte, reportedly due to a “lack of demand.”
Instead, it has been replaced by a less-favourable chocolate biscuit.
Others have noticed how there are less of their popular biscuits like Lemon Creams and Strawberry Whirls, and more of the “cheaper” ones like Toppers.
